Poggio ai Ginepri - 2012
Starting from the month of June, temperatures rose considerably in comparison to those of the year before, reaching an average of 24°C, in keeping with the season; but with some extremely hot days even touching 37° C, which helped the plants to grow, especially during blossoming and veraison.
The summer months which followed were sunny and very hot, with no rain and with maximum temperatures reaching 38° C, but with high temperature excursion between day and night, which enhanced the aromatical development, as well as the grapes' polyphenolic characteristics.
Due to such a hot and above all dry August, the harvest began very early, on 27th August. We had some rain (25mm) in the first week of September, which allowed the vines not to interrupt their growing season and to arrive to full maturation of the early ripening grapes, especially the Merlot ones. The Cabernet Franc and the Syrah were picked during the third week of September, and were immediately followed by the Petit Verdot. The harvest was finished on 5th October with the Cabernet Sauvignon.

After destemming and soft crushing the different grape varieties were vinified separately. Fermentation and maceration took place in stainless steel vats for 15-20 days at a controlled temperature within 28° C.
Half of the wine was then transferred into used 225 l French oak Barriques, where malolactic fermentation was completed and the wine was aged for about 8 months. The other 50% of the wine remained in stainless steel tanks for the fining and was then blended before the final bottling.
Intense and deep red colour with purple reflexes. On the nose intense and fresh with flowery aromas of violets and balsamic hints combined to red fruit like cherries, plumbs and blackberries. The palate is round, complex with ripen and sweet tannins. Nice fruity aftertaste with good acidity, which offers a long lingering and fresh finish.
