Villa Donoratico - 2012
The following spring was characterized by moderate temperatures and rainfalls (the average temperature in May was about 17.5 °C and the total rain was 63 mm), which did not cause any problems such as downy mildew or powdery mildew. Starting from June, the temperatures increased considerably compared to the previous year and then reached the normal season average of 24 °C. Some very hot days (up to 37 °C) favoured plant development and fruit setting.
The following summer months were sunny and hot. There were no rainfalls and the maximum temperature reached 38 °C. The considerable differences in temperature between night and day favoured the development of perfumes and polyphenols in the grapes.
As August was so hot and dry, the harvest started already on 27 August. The rainfalls in the first week of September allowed the vines to continue their development and the early-ripening varieties, especially Merlot, to produce fully-ripe grapes. Cabernet Franc and Syrah were harvested in the third week of September. Petit Verdot was harvested immediately afterwards. The last Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were harvested on 5 October.
Appellation: DOC Bolgheri Rosso
Blend: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot
Intense ruby red with purple highlights. Rich and complex nose with fruity hints of plums, bilberries and raspberries as well as balsamic notes of mint, eucalyptus and sage. In the background hints of cocoa, nutmeg, pepper and a fine finish of rosemary. Elegant palate where the grace and the structure of its tannins bear witness to the perfect ageing in wood. Medium-bodied wine with fruity notes of black berries and a spicy balsamic character. Well-structured wine with good aromatic length and a fresh mineral finish.
